We are pleased to introduce two innovative MBBR-based systems that are redefining nitrate management in Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS). These integrated solutions effectively address one of the most persistent operational challenges in RAS - efficient nitrate removal.
Our combined Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) and algal reactor system delivers a sustainable approach to nutrient reduction. In this configuration, the MBBR unit efficiently converts ammonia to nitrate through rapid nitrification, while the subsequent algal reactor absorbs both nitrate and phosphate, significantly reducing their concentrations in the water. Performance metrics demonstrate remarkable improvements: total nitrogen removal increases to 42.8% compared to just 3.9% using MBBR alone, total phosphorus removal reaches 66.8%, with the additional benefit of producing reusable algal biomass.
For systems requiring targeted nitrate removal, the integration of MBBR with Solid-Phase Denitrification (SPD) technology offers an engineered solution. The MBBR promotes nitrification under aerobic conditions, while the SPD reactor utilizes biodegradable polymers to drive the denitrification process. This system maintains nitrate levels consistently below 10 mg/L without risks of bacterial contamination or organic pollution.
Our lead engineer commented: "These hybrid configurations represent a new era in RAS water treatment. By integrating MBBR with either algal or SPD technologies, we achieve exceptional nutrient control, system stability, and sustainability - all critical factors for the future of aquaculture."
