New MBBR Media Boosts Biofilm Stability and Wastewater Removal Efficiency

A new generation of MBBR media has been developed to tackle long-standing challenges in wastewater treatment, including unstable biofilm formation and fluctuating pollutant removal rates. Early pilot trials show enhanced efficiency and robust performance even under extreme conditions.

At a municipal wastewater treatment plant in Singapore, engineer Li carefully observes the aeration tank in the early morning. Tiny particles of the upgraded MBBR media rotate gently in the water. “Look at this,” he says, pointing to the biofilm attached to the carriers, “it’s sticking firmly. No more large patches falling off like before.”

Mobile Bed Biofilm Reactors (MBBR) are widely used in municipal and industrial wastewater treatment. However, operators often face three recurring issues: poor biofilm attachment, inconsistent removal rates, and unstable performance under adverse conditions. A newly designed MBBR media now addresses these challenges from the root.

Li adds: “Even when influent quality changes, the biofilm remains intact. The system runs smoothly on its own.”
